Laupahoehoe Point

A leaf shaped peninsula of black lava, Laupahoehoe, means "leaf of lava".  Known as a place where thirty two lives were taken, a memorial stone marks the site of a school that met with tragedy.

In 1946 waves reaching heights of 30 feet destroyed the school during a historic tsunami, tidal wave. The constant thundering of waves meeting surf is a humbling sound.
