Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Peak

Lassen Peak - The World's Largest Plug Dome Volcano where the Cascades join the Sierra Nevada. We enjoyed the scenic drive through redwood and aspen trees, lava flows, and the remains of the ancestral Mount Tehama. This stratovolcano was destroyed in glacial times. We actually got to stand where the center once existed. Lassen Peak, a plug dome volcano, once protruded from the flank of Mount Tehama, erupting in 1915.

There were so many beautiful sights to see among the devastated areas these volcanoes left behind. Beautiful sapphire colored lakes: Emerald Lake and Helen Lake and lush, green Kings Creek Meadows and Kings Creek Falls.

Bumpass Hell at Lassen Park

Bumpass Hell at Lassen Park - Stinky!!!

A short 3 mile hike on Bumpass Hell Trail led us to a large area of hot springs, mud pots, boiling pools and of course that lovely sulfur smell.

Boiling Mud Pot at Lassen Park

Boiling Mud Pot at Lassen Park

The story here is that an explorer by the name of Kendall Von (something) Bumpass lost his leg when he stepped into one of the boiling pools.
