Dean Smith Served as the head basketball coach of the University of North Carolina for thirty-two year. During that time, he compiled a remarkable record. Coach Smith's teams won 879 games, more than any other in collegiate basketball. His teams recorded 27 consecutive twenty-win seasons. The "Tar Heels" won thirteen Atlantic Coast Conference titles, played in eleven Final Fours, and won two national championships. Under Coach Smith's tenure, a remarkable 49 men went on to play at the professional level. This list of athletes includes such NBA Hall-of-Famers as Bob McAdoo, James Worthy, and Michael Jordan.
But Coach Smith's greatest achievement was not on the basketball court, but in the arena of life. James Jordan, Michael Jordan's father, credited Smith and his leadership for much of his son's success. Before a playoff game in Chicago in 1993, the elder Jordan observed: "People underestimate the program that Dean Smith runs. He helped Michael realize his athletic ability and hone it. But more important than that, he built character in Michael that took him through his career," (Mitchell Krugel, Jordan: The Man, His Words, His Life New York: St. Martin's Press, 1994, p.39).
Dean Smith reproduced outstanding leaders in sports and in life by the example he set.
