WEHS Cross-Country Team
"Paving the Way in 1999"
Waconda East has something new this fall sports season, cross-country.
Phillip Shamburg, sophomore, is the lone male runner. Melinda Bock, sophomore, and Melodie
Bock, senior make up the girls duo. They are being coached by Keith Wineinger. They
started practice two weeks before school, then run after school and on their own.
Practices vary from running 7 miles to running sprints to increase speed. They usually are
seen running out to the golf course and have been to known to get lost!
They had 7 regular season meets including, Ellis, Plainville, Smith Center, Hill City,
Beloit, Phillisburg, and Downs. Courses varied as much as the runners. Cross-country is
known for its hills and long courses, but runners have the endurance and stamina to make
it happen.
WEHS runners did make big things happen, as their results below show! Regionals at
Washington were on October 23. They competed to be one of the top 10 runners to qualify
for state on October 30 at Wamego. Melodie was honored to qualify and represent WEHS at
State on a very tough course. All in all the trio were excited to start a new tradition at
Wacky High, something for all to get involved in. They were thankful to have a coach and
fans to cheer them on. Be watching for WE cross-country teams of the future!!
