AGRICULTURE

Agriculture in Mitchell County is diverse. Diverse in the fact that farmers here raise both crops and livestock. The vast majority of crops are produced under dryland conditions. Wheat is the most important crop, followed by grain sorghum, soybeans, corn, alfalfa, oats, forage sorghums and grass hays. Annually there are 40,000 to 50,000 head of beef cattle in Mitchell County. This number includes beef cows that have calved, cattle on feed, backgrounder cattle, replacement heifers, etc. Mitchell County is home to 20-25,000 head of hogs and about 5,000 head of sheep and lambs.

Beloit's location along the Kyle Railroad gives access to all markets across the country.

Beloit has cattle feedlots, livestock auction, agricultural chemical and fertilizer company, Commercial feed mill manufacturing, machinery and equipment manufacturing, grain elevators and a meat packing plant. Swine, sheep and cow/calf and yearling backgrounding operations are also present.
